7-7-13 – Brecksville, Ohio
Autumn Wind is officially no
longer ours. I’m not sure if I’m sad to
see her go and can no longer call myself a cruiser or even a boater, or if I’m
happy it went so quickly sparing us the pain of dealing with an extended long
term cross country burden. Frankly, it
is all part of the plan, so it’s probably a good thing. Although it’s still hard for me to look at
pictures of her and not think of all the good times we had. Hopefully her new owners will take care of
her and keep her active long into the future.
Thankfully her departure comes at just the right time as we are putting
offers in on houses to settle into here in Ohio. Like learning all there is to know about a
boat, there is a lot to learn about buying an older house in Ohio. For one they have basements! On the upside that gives you all kinds of
extra space, not to mention a nice hidy hole when tornados come by. On the downside they seem to do their best to
collect water. Like most houses in the Midwest,
they have this green leafy stuff in the front and back yard that grows profusely,
never slows down and seems to require constant attention to keep nature beaten
back or else it will overtake your yard like the jungle. That will be a change from the watery yard surrounding
the boat.
Random Ohio thoughts: Apparently, the wolves and coyotes are non existent
as the deer population is so dense you can catch them by hand on a casual
Sunday walk. Maybe not that dense, but
they are every where. It’s almost like we
cut down their habitat to build houses and Wal-Marts, and there are too many
people around to shoot them. So now they
are resigned to eating yard flowers and bird seed out of the feeders and getting
squished by trucks on the freeway. Lightning bugs are cool. Just a thought. You can’t let the rain dictate your plans or
you would never do anything. Learn to
bring a rain coat, or just be ok with getting wet, it is summer and pretty warm
you know. To that note, never leave your
windows down in your car, no matter how nice it looks right now, you will
probably have a wet butt on the ride home.
I’m slowly learning that you just have to love the area for what it is
and not compare it to anywhere else. We
are looking forward to doing the “house” thing, even if it doesn’t move every
day or so. Cleveland is a big city and
there’s lots of stuff to do; and we are like teenagers who just got our drivers
license. Ready to go anywhere just to
check it out.
PS - sorry for no pics, its sort of lame since I actually have great internet so I can't use that excuse any more, just don't have any handy. I'll do better next time.
